Where’s my GC?

Another real-life experience when I encountered missing GC due to corrupt DC. This was suspected to happen because before the corrupt DC went offline, replication to other GC has not taken place, and this has caused Exchange Server could not find any valid GC (…yes, Exchange Server 2000 involved in this scenario). Here’s what can be done to those who have encounter the same incident. After a lot of google taken place, here’s what I can share:

Use NTDSUTIL, a command-line tool to manage AD, and in this case, we’re using this tool to perform metadata cleanup.
Check DNS to see any entry of GC and make sure that the primary DNS zone(s) is set to AD-Integrated and all other online server(s) DNS properties (under NIC TCP/IP properties) is set to register in DNS.

Point the 2nd DC (or other DCs) to the primary DNS and restart their Netlogon service. You may change this DNS setting later to point at itself for those DCs but make sure that its DNS is set to AD-Integrated. Give it some time before repointing DNS.

Hope that would help on missing GC… Leave a comment if you have more better solution :)

System Background Info

This I’ve got to share… During working with one of Malaysia’s biggest telecommunication company, I came across this cool tool called BGInfo. What this tool does is it displays system information on desktop’s background about information that may need you to extract say from SystemInfo or MSINFO32; info including Hostname, boot time info, CPU, TCP/IP info, currently logged-on user and many more.

The good thing about this software is that it does not keep on consuming your system resources because once you place BGInfo in Startup folder, it will write desktop bitmap and exits.

You can configure what info you’d like to be display and once done, you can save the settings and import the saved settings so that it could be loaded to other systems. So no need to do it manually for each and every computer should you need it to install it on multiple computers. A neat tool to configure your organization’s Common Operating Environment (COE). Best of all, it’s FREE and configurable!

Determining Server’s Uptime

Here’s how you can determine your server’s uptime, and if there’s an occurrence of improper shutdown you can always use either “Uptime” or “Systeminfo” from your command prompt.

To use Uptime, the most common option you can use is by issuing “uptime /s” to display the system events. Here it’ll list down when you boot up the server or any shutdown and even abnormal shutdown will be listed. It will also tell you how long have your system being online since the last shutdown.

Systeminfo on the other hand will not tell you if there’s any abnormal shutdown but still will tell your server’s uptime. This tool will not only provide uptime info but will also list an abundance of system information which you may not get from MSINFO32. It’s hard to read all info from command prompt, so what you can do is just pipe it to say a text file (e.g. Saving the file on D: drive with file name SysInfo.txt) with below command:
Systeminfo > D:\SysInfo.txt

Why Not I.E.??

I have come across this problem where IE would not set as default browser even after the option “Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser” from Tools > Internet Options > Programs is turned ON. This happen after installing Avant browser.

So, if you should experience the same, just issue this command from RUN box or your command prompt: “shmgrate.exe OCInstallReinstallIE

Your I.E. 6 should be set as default browser. But just remember that this fix only works on Windows XP with SP1 or later only.

Hola!

<start>Hello citizens of the NET…

Whether you come across this site by accident or by procedure call or by instinct, I welcome you and hope that you’ll benefit something. :)

After a while of Blogstipation finally I’m able to come up with something. I owe Azam big time for lending some space and sharing some insights on blogging and of course to the one Man who has done nothing but inspire me; who I owe a lot: my life, my career, my family. I’m just grateful to God for the blessings and for letting him in “our” life. I told him that time, that I’m starting my blog and I know if he did browse this site, all he ever get was just a landing page with no content! Sorry Boss. But, I finally has landed! I sincerely hope that I can benefit myself as well as others. Starting with a small step, one at a time… BTW Boss, saw your house @ Wikimapia

I don’t intend to turn it to Blogorrhea site nor do I ever want to boreblogging. But if you think whatever content in this site may bring benefits to you or to mankind or perhaps you think that I may have written an incorrect info, then stop being Blogsnob and give positive comment ;)

… And if you have no idea what is Blogstipation, blogorrhea or anything of the like, all you have to do is just Wiki …Got it? <end>

// I hope to add more content in the near future but time will tell yah? :D
